about

“Dawn Redwood Winter” is a song of hope and renewal. It was inspired by a majestic deciduous dawn redwood in the Boston Public Gardens. Strolling through the garden’s pathway this song and title washed over me. It’s a tale of love and letting go. “This is my dawn redwood winter. I stand firm against the wind. I’ll drop my weathered leaves. And more will grow again.”

lyrics

Dawn Redwood Winter - Tina Ross

We used to walk the public gardens
I’d wrap your hand in mine
We always stopped at the dawn redwood
With her swirling bark, creeping roots entwined.

I’m letting go, letting go.

Last winter early in December
They cut the roses down and left a mound
I knew in April they ‘d be uncovered
Along with the plants wintering in the greenhouse.

I’m letting go, letting go.

This is my dawn redwood winter
I stand firm against the wind
I’ll drop my weathered leaves
And more will grow again.

It’s autumn and the redwood’s trunk has grown
She’s tossed her cones to the ground
A willow’s bough dips down to test the waters
I thought I saw you in the crowd.

I’m letting go, letting go.

This was my dawn redwood winter
I stood firm against the wind
I dropped my weathered leaves
And more will grow again.

I dropped my weathered leaves
And more will grow again
I know they’ll grow again.
