about

“Artemisia” – Artemisia Gentileschi was a 17th century artist who overcame tremendous obstacles to become an artist recognized in her time. I wanted to capture her struggle, resilience and celebrates her virtuosity and determination. I wrote and imagined Artemisia saying “I wield this dry dye and oil to be defiant. We will not be silenced.”

lyrics

Artemisia - Tina Ross

My dress shimmers green, an emerald drape
Its edges scratch from grainy lace
My eyebrows curious and arched
My patience worn, my patience parched.

I mix my pigments, crush them with stone
Truth ground into savage tones
I choose to draw a bloody knife
Highlighting dark is always mixed with light.

Damn this 17th century
I face a faceless enemy
Trying to steal what’s real for me.
I am Artemisia.

Vindicated, I left my father’s home
Wrapped up my brushes, will and shadows
With brazen strokes my heroines are freed
I paint their prowess, wounds and stories.

Damn this 17th century
I expose absurdity
I will prove an artist’s mastery
I am Artemisia, I am Artemisia.

I hear the call of this stretched linen
It cannot speak, but I listen
I wield this dry dye and oil to be defiant
We will not be silenced.

And I’ll beat this 17th century
I carry letters from Kings and Queens
Patrons see my creativity
Painting as a woman’s allegory
I am Artemisia, I am Artemisia.
